Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Have a question about RestlessNatives.net that isn't answered below? Ask us.

Q: Your website looks awful.

A: That's not a question.

Q: Well, why does it look awful?

A: Probably because your browser isn't properly interpreting our cascading style sheets (we use Internet Explorer 6.0 and it displays our site correctly, so you could go download that). It's also possible that the site would look better if you viewed it at a higher resolution (we use 1280x1024). And experiment with the window to find a width you're comfortable with.
If you can see the site fine and just don't like the design, you're welcome to offer constructive criticism.

Here's what the index page should look like (if you hover on the little sidebar):

Q: I'm having trouble finding something.

A: The main site menu is in the left-hand sidebar (you'll find it below the main content of each page if the site isn't displaying properly), and you'll see other links (colored blue) throughout the site. Click one. In particular, NativeGuides links to all the travel stuff, and NativeCrafts links to all the photos. Most other odds and ends will be somewhere in Archipelago.

Q: So how'd you make the site?

A: We used DreamWeaver this time around, which is a big step up from FrontPage but still pretty easy to use. When we get around to it, we might try adding some ColdFusion or Flash, but for now everything is done with CSS and a tiny bit of (horribly ugly) javascript (which we're going to change at some point). The images were done with Image Composer - it isn't perfect but it's what we have.

Q: Where are the photos from your trip to [insert location here]?

A: Hey, we're working on it. Until recently we had no digital camera, so we had to hand-scan all of the images for the site. We're also missing photos from a number of early trips, but we hope to add them if and when we get the rest of our stuff out of storage.

Q: What's the origin of the "restless natives" name?

A: As far as we can tell, the "natives are restless" phrase was first used in The Island of Lost Souls, a 1933 film based on the H.G. Wells novel The Island of Doctor Moreau. It's a classic horror film, one of the best ever made, and puts later Moreau movies to shame. Upon hearing the jungle resounding with the drums and growls of his beast-men subjects, the not-so-good doctor comments, "The natives are restless tonight." Bingo, instant cliche. Why do we use the name? That's just the sort of thing we do around here.

Q: What is your favorite color?

A: Red. No, blue! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaghhhhh...
